What is osteopathy ?
- Osteopathy is a primary healthcare system complementary to other medical practices. Suitable for almost anyone it can contribute to alleviating an enormous range of conditions and is one of the safest and most effective forms of treatment for musculo-skeletal pain.

- Osteopathy is a manual therapy which uses an established, recognised system of diagnosis and treatment with its main emphasis on the structural integrity of the body.
- Osteopathy is an holistic therapy which means that is considers the body as a whole being. It is distinctive in the fact that it recognises much of the pain and disability we suffer stems from abnormalities in the function of the body structure as well as damage caused to it by disease processes.
An osteopath uses many of the diagnostic procedures used in conventional medical assessment and diagnosis. Its main strength lies in the unique way the patient is assessed from a mechanical, functional and postural standpoint and the methods of treatment applied to suit the individual needs of the patient in an holistic manner.

Osteopathic practice and techniques will differ between practitioners due to the abundance of osteopathic techniques available and the differences in the physicality of the practitioner, also perhaps any specific area of interest or specialism they may have.
Osteopathic Practitioner Regulation
Osteopathy was the first complementary therapy profession to gain government recognition in 1993 when the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC) was formed. Osteopathic practitioners and standards in the UK are now monitored and maintained via registration with the GOsC that requires all osteopaths to engage in proven regular continuing professional development. The effect of this is that patients can benefit from ever increasing high standards of osteopathic treatment and well-being advice.
